Whenever we make a concsious decision to change an old habit, or let go of something that’s holding us back, it often comes as a bit of surprise, that once the initial surge of motivation wears thin, we realise it’s not as easy as we thought it was going to be! In fact, it’s really quite hard, and seems to get harder and harder as time moves on! It’s almost as if we find ourselves ”missing” our old ways, like we miss an old friend! You’d think that as intelligent human beings, we’d instinctively gravitate towards things that are naturally good for us, and that serve us. However, let’s face it, as humans, we are creatures of habit. And as any “creature of habit”, we naturally gravitate toward people, places, and even behavioural patterns that make us feel comfortable, safe, secure and accepted. As such, many of the habits we have, have been handed down to us. They’re often based on the behaviour of those around us, rather than being conscious choices. Role models (past and present) can be healthy, OR unhealthy! Our “role models” don’t (and didn’t) always make the healthiest choices!
Parents, take note… You can’t expect your children to make healthy food choices, or form healthy lifestyle habits if those around them are making poor ones!
So, when it comes to changing the foods we eat, or the lifestyle habits we’ve got into, it’s often very different from the majority or our peer group, or the people closest to us. And guess what… we stick out like a sore thumb! Suddenly, we feel “different”, “singled out” and “exposed”. This is the time when so many people throw in the towel, and revert to their familiar old ways… simply so they can feel accepted again. So what is the answer?
1) Firstly, consider joining my 365-day on-line coaching and mentoring program. You have nothing to lose, yet so much to gain from being led, supported and motivated, so that you successfully reach the goal you want to achieve. Whether that be weight loss, healthier eating or more energy, SimplyNutrition365 will help you get find all of these. Best of all, the first 14 days are absolutely FREE!
2) Be strong, be confident, and step into your own unique individuality.
3) Accept that for a time there will be a fair amount of discomfort associated with changing and sticking to new habits and new food choices. Just knowing that it’s hard or challenging, and having some compassion for yourself as you work through the process of change will help enormously. This will help you to stay on track, especially when the urge to go back to familiarity rears it’s ugly head!
4) Keep in the forefront of your mind that eventually you will establish new, healthier patterns, and the ”pull” to go back to the old ones, will disappear. In time, you’ll instinctively reach for things that are good for you, and the desire for excellent heatlth, more energy, or consistent weight loss, will form a strong foundation, and give you the motivation you have been looking for.
5) Be aware, and understand that, just as any other human being would experience, the only way to reach a goal, or make the changes you so want to make, is to endure a time of challenge, and a certain amount of discomfort. Remind yourself that your body and mind always need time to adjust to a new way of doing things, or a new way of living. You will adapt, if you remain true to the vision of how you really want to be and live.
Go for it, and good luck!
